THE ESTATE

The week the tarn froze
It happens perhaps one winter in four, and it changes the sound of the whole glen.
Fiona Ross
Estate manager

The tarn took its first skin on a Tuesday, the way it always does — at the shallow end, in the reeds, where the water is slowest.
By Thursday you could stand on the jetty and hear nothing at all. That is the part nobody warns you about. A tarn in open water makes a constant small noise, and when it stops the silence has weight to it.
We do not encourage anyone onto the ice. Argyll ice is rarely honest ice. But the walk round the edge in that week is the best two miles on the estate, and the light comes off the surface in a way that makes everything look nearer than it is.
Read it, then come.
