A night walk with no torch

There is no light pollution here worth the name. Give your eyes forty minutes and the glen gives you the rest.

A night walk with no torch — Larchfield

Full dark adaptation takes about forty minutes and one glance at a phone screen undoes all of it. That is the entire discipline.

Start at the car park, take the track west past the Long Lodge, and keep going to the gate. It is flat, it is unmistakable underfoot, and there is nothing on it to trip over.

On a clear moonless night you will see the Milky Way as a genuine band rather than an idea. On a cloudy one you will see nothing at all and hear a great deal, which is arguably better.
